Season 2 Overview

We've launched Sustainability Media Academy (SMA) Season 2 on 19 May 2023 at the 360 immersive studio in CATAPULT. Applications for the Singapore Masterclass are closed. Applications are closed on 11 July 2023.

Applicants for the Satellite Workshops must be based in the host country (Malaysia, Indonesia or Philippines) and must be fluent in the respective local language (Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia or Tagalog) in which the workshop will be held.

The SMA aims to provide high-quality media and communication education for both practicing journalists and editors, as well as content creators from any country in the Asia-Pacific region who are interested in sustainable development and climate issues. The programme is focused on sustainability and sustainable development and will equip participants with the tools to produce excellent content on sustainability and sustainable development issues.

This programme builds on a successful pilot in 2022, when we hosted the inaugural edition, receiving over 150 submissions across 12 countries. About 50 journalists and editors were selected from around the region, including from Malaysia, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Vietnam, the Philippines, among others and participated in three full-day workshops across three months featuring experts and trainers from across media, academia, business and policy.

Season 2 will deepen its regional presence, by working with strategic partners, to host two days of workshops in Singapore for all to attend and three satellite workshops in Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. In these workshops, journalists and content creators will be able to discuss and learn about key issues in their local contexts.

We will work in partnership with Eco-Business, Temasek, Mediacorp and Nanyang Technological University as knowledge partners, to curate and offer a unique curriculum catered to young aspiring journalists and/or content producers, who are keen to dive into the sustainability landscape.

This programme will come at no charge for successful applicants.

Tracks

The second edition of the SMA programming is split into two tracks:

1) The Sustainability Media Academy Masterclass: a comprehensive two-day (18 and 19 July, full days) training programme in hybrid format designed to help participants acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to produce high-quality content and advance their reporting on sustainability and sustainable development issues. The masterclass will offer a detailed overview of climate and sustainable development in Asia and provide insights into innovative ways of reporting on these issues in their respective countries. 2) The Sustainability Media Academy Satellite Workshops: Held in Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia, the one day workshops will provide a country-level focus on sustainability and sustainable development issues. These workshops will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to navigate their local ecosystem and will be conducted in the local language. APPLICATIONS CLOSED.

Satellite Workshops will occur between August to October 2023, exact date to be confirmed. They will be held in the capital cities - Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Jakarta, in a hybrid format. Participants may attend virtually or in-person. Travel expenses will not be covered by EB Impact.

Applications & Eligibility Criteria

For the Season 2 intake, we are looking for journalists and content creators, across all experience levels, who are passionate about sustainable development and want to deepen their knowledge and skills to report on these topics.

This programme is open to both practicing journalists and editors, as well as content creators from any country in the Asia-Pacific region who are self-motivated and interested in sustainable development and climate issues.  

We welcome applications from journalists from print, television, online and/or radio, multimedia creators such as filmmakers, etc. as well as content creators with a presence on social media and other platforms. Content creators are those who create entertaining or educational material expressed through any medium or channel, especially pertaining to, but not limited to, digital content.   

Applications are open to participants with any level of experience, however, a basic understanding and knowledge of sustainable development and climate change are essential.  

Two streams of participants  

1) Masterclass Participants - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Core participants will be required to join two full-day workshops on 18 and 19 July 2023. They may choose to join a regional workshop, if relevant to them.

Eligibility criteria: 

·     The applicant is a journalist, established or aspiring, and/or content creator from any country in the Asia-Pacific region who is self-motivated and interested in sustainable development and climate issues.  

·      The applicant has near fluent or fluent proficiency in English

2) Satellite Workshop Participants - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Regional participants must come from the country the satellite workshops are conducted in: Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. These participants will not be required to join the masterclasses but must attend the full-day workshop in their respective countries. These workshops will occur between August to October, exact date to be confirmed.

Eligibility criteria: 

·      The applicant is a journalist, established or aspiring, and/or content creator from any country in the Asia-Pacific region who are self-motivated and interested in sustainable development and climate issues.  

·      The applicant has near fluent or fluent proficiency in the local language of the workshop they are applying for (i.e.Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu and Tagalog.

Impact Report

Advisory Board

The Sustainability Media Academy is supported by an advisory board comprising of experts in the field of journalism, sustainability and sustainability-focused journalism.

Members of this advisory board will:

·       Offer strategic guidance for the academy and in the development of the academy’s curriculum

·       Be advocates and share about the academy with their community and students

·       Potentially partake in panel sessions as expert speakers or in specific segments of the programme

 

Season 1

About the programme

The Sustainability Media Academy (SMA) is an initiative for both practicing and aspiring journalists and editors, as well as content creators from any country in the Asia-Pacific region, to help them better understand sustainability and sustainable development issues and develop expertise and authority to produce content.

Piloting for the first time this 2022, SMA aims to help to raise the awareness levels among society in Asia as well as raise the level of trust in information and quality of debate on sustainability issues. 

The academy will act as an enabler for individuals to learn to produce high-quality content to advance sustainability in the region. The academy will equip individuals with the knowledge and tools in their pursuit of knowledge and content production around sustainability issues.

We will work in partnership with Eco-Business, Asia Pacific’s leading digital media organisation on sustainable development and other knowledge partners, to curate and offer a unique curriculum catered for young aspiring journalists and/or content producers, who are keen to dive into the sustainability landscape.

The programme will come at no charge for successful applicants.

Workshops

The Sustainability Media Academy comprises of three days of media workshops to develop story ideas, contacts, and network with other journalists from the region. The academy will provide participants with an overview of climate and sustainable development in Asia and uncover new ways of reporting on these issues for their countries. The workshops include:

1) 101 Journalism on Sustainability, 19 August 2022: This module covers the fundamentals of journalism on sustainability or sustainable development issues and content writing, providing participants with relevant background knowledge on sustainability topics.

2) Finding your voice: Story-telling in multimedia formats, 12 September 2022: This module will cover the fundamentals of multimedia production and how it can be used for effective story-telling in the sustainability context.

3) Deepening Knowledge, 6 October 2022: This module covers the fundamentals of how an aspiring journalist can work on discovering a niche topic or subject area in the field of sustainability.

These workshops facilitate the participants’ understanding of the multi-faceted issues in driving sustainable development in the region. The exposure to a myriad of issues and industry verticals will help the participants identify a niche sector that they are most keen to explore.

The hybrid workshops will run from August to October.

Asia Journalism Fellowship

The Asia Journalism Fellowship (AJF) brings together seasoned journalists from varied backgrounds and working in widely differing circumstances to learn and work together. This year, EB impact had the honour of hosting a one-day Climate Change and Sustainability reporting workshop for the AJF Fellows. Through a series of lectures and breakout activities, the programme covered the fundamentals of journalism on sustainable development issues and multimedia production in the sustainability context.
